Classic Animation Books

Walt Disney

The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney

Book

GAC Recommended
"The Animated Man: A Life of Walt Disney" by Michael Barrier: 416 pages. Animation historian Michael Barrier's absorbing biography of Disney avoids "the well-traveled paths of previous biographers, who have tended to portray a blemish-free Disney or to indulge in lurid speculation. Instead, he takes the full measure of the man in his many aspects. A consummate storyteller, Barrier describes how Disney transformed himself from Midwestern farm boy to scrambling young businessman to pioneering artist and, finally, to entrepreneur on a grand scale."

Disney: The Ultimate Visual Guide

Book - Out-of-print.
"Disney: The Ultimate Visual Guide" by Russell Shroeder: 128 pages; full-color book. Similar to the Looney Tunes Ultimate Visual Guide by Jerry Beck: lots of photos and screen captures, but rather light on text. While this book does spend a lot of time on the classic animation of Walt Disney (even mentioning "Song of the South" from 1946), be aware that a good portion of the book is dedicated to post-Walt animation from the Disney company, including films like "Pocahontas" and "Tarzan".
